Chelation Therapy

What is Chelation Therapy?
Chelation is defined as the incorporation of a metal ion into a heterocyclic ring structure. In simple terms chelation therapy is well documented and used widely around the world for removal of toxic metals from the human body. Lead toxicity, mercury intoxication, Iron overload and cadmium deposition in the body is well known to produce disease. Chelation therapy is usually the treatment of choice for these problems. An off-label use of EDTA chelation therapy has been utilized since the 1950's as an adjunctive treatment for vascular disease including coronary, peripheral and carotid.

Clinical experience has demonstrated that chelation has been used successfully in millions of patients with heavy metal toxicity, coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease. Chelation therapy has been utilized in other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus. There have been anecdotal reports of macular degeneration being helped with chelation therapy as well.

How Chelation Therapy is carried out at the Anello Clinic.
You will be given information on Chelation Therapy in the form of written material and videotaped information. You may ask for a session with one of our clinical Nurses to view the facility and ask questions. When you are sure you would like to pursue Chelation therapy you may ask for a Patient Questionairre, fill it out and request an appointment with Dr. Anello.

Initial Visit
On your first visit the physician will review your medical history with you. You are requested to complete a Patient Questionair beforehand which will assist in this initial evaluation. (This questionair can be obtained at the office or you can put in a request by phone.) A complete physical examination concentrating upon your particular situation will also be carried out at the initial visit. If you decide to proceed with chelaiton treatments a laboratory requisition will be give for a number of hematological and biochemical tests. General kidney function tests, vitamin and mineral levels as well as novel risk factors for cardiovascular disease will be assessed. See Cardiovascular Risk Panel and Vitamin and Mineral Panel under Laboratory Diagnostics.

Vitamins and Supplements
After your first treatment the physician will review your laboratory results with you. Any deficiencies in vitamins, minerals or hormones will be discussed and a replacement program prescribed. EDTA chelation therapy is a nutrient-requiring-process and vitamins and mineral supplements will be required during your treatment. Other nutrients or nutriceuticals will be discussed dependant upon your individual needs. Many of the supplements are available through the Clinic as they are deemed part of the chelation treatment.

Heavy Metal Testing
You may be required to give either urine samples or hair samples or both for heavy metal testing. This is a non OHIP test. The cost of the urine heavy metal testing is $150.00. Hair mineral analysis testing is $75.00.

Where, When and How.
Chelation treatments are scheduled at the Anello Clinic at 401 Laurel Street in Cambridge Ontario. (A map of how to get to the Anello Clinic is on the location page.) Chelation treatments are scheduled Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Chelation is an intravenous treatment. The treatment typically takes 2 to 21/2 hours. Our nurses will start your intravenous after taking your blood pressure. You are asked to drink plenty of water both before, during and after the treatment (1.5 - 2 litres of water in an 10 - 12 hour period). Please refrain from caffeine beverages, heavy exercise and calcium supplements on the day of chelation.

Number of Treatments
The number of chelation treatments varies according to individual factors such as severity of disease, chronicity, kidney function and overall health. On average 20 to 30 treatments are required for therapeutic value. Benefits may not be noticeable for three months after treatments. Maintenance treatments, usually monthly, are recommended to maintain the benefit.

Contents of Chelation Treatments
The following is contained in most chelation intravenous treatments. Each intravenous is custom formulated according to the patients kidney function, disease and vitamin/mineral status. The following ingredients are mixed in a carrier solution of Sterile Water or Dextrose Water.

EDTA this is the chelating agent. From 1 gram to 3 grams is utilized

ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C) this major antioxidant also has chelating qualities. It protects against free radical damage, improves collagen cross linking, helps cell integrity and boosts the immune system.

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE
Magnesium is often frankly deficient or low in most people. Magnesium is important in lowering blood pressure, has a role in preventing arrhythmias, aids in muscle relaxation and is required in some 300 different enzymatic reaction in the body.

SODIUM BICARBONATE Alkalanizing agent, buffers the solution.

B VITAMINS Thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, methylcobalamin. The B vitamins aid in preventing arteriosclerosis, helps in immune functioning, essential in brain and nervous system functioning and aids in energy production.

GLUTATHIONE this important nutrient helps make energy production more efficient and is a powerful antioxidant, protector of the mitochondrion organelles in the cells. Glutathione is added on an intermittent basis in order to maintain levels in brain and nervous system.

Lipoic Acid another important antioxidant in the nervous system is added during the maintanance program to help reduce oxidative damage in the brain and nervous system.

ADDITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS MAY BE ADDED DEPENDANT UPON A PERSONS INDIVIDUAL VITAMIN, MINERAL STATUS AND DISEASE PROCESS.
